Heat transfer simulation in a vertical Bridgman CdTe growth configuration

1999

Modelling and numerical simulation of crystal growth processes have been shown to be powerful tools in order to understand the physical effects of different parameters on the growth conditions. In this study a finite difference/control volume technique for the study of heat transfer has been employed. This model takes into account the whole system: furnace temperature profile, air gap between furnace walls and ampoule, ampoule geometry, crucible coating if any, solid and liquid CdTe thermal properties, conduction, convection and radiation of heat and phase change. We have used the commercial code FLUENT for the numerical resolution that can be running on a personal computer. Results show th…

A Theoretical Approach to the Shift Mechanics of Rubber Belt Variators

2008

This paper proposes a theoretical description of the mechanical behavior of rubber belt variators during the speed ratio shift. Comparing with the steady operation, the mass conservation of the belt is completely reformulated considering an elementary dihedral control volume between two planes through the pulley axis and balancing the inside mass variation with the total mass flux through the control surface. On the other hand, the belt equilibrium conditions are similar to the steady case, as the inertia forces due to the shifting motion are negligible with respect to the other forces. Assuming a one-dimensional belt model, it is shown that adhesive regions may appear inside the arc of con…

MCNP5 modelling of HPGe detectors for efficiency evaluation in gamma-ray spectrometry

2009

A modelling of HPGe detectors was performed through simulation with the MCNP5 Monte Carlo code. The simulation results concerning the values of the main physical parameters of the detector are in most cases different from those provided by the manufacturer. The use of “single-line” sources allows us to suitably modify the parameter values used in the detector model. For a detector model, the simulation assesses the distribution of photopeak and total efficiency for point sources, whereas for extended sources a control volume approach allows us to determine elementary efficiency behaviours. An integration of elementary efficiencies over the entire sample volume allows us to evaluate global e…

CFD simulations of dense solid–liquid suspensions in baffled stirred tanks: Prediction of the minimum impeller speed for complete suspension

2012

Abstract In the literature on mechanically agitated solid–liquid systems, several methods are described to estimate the minimum impeller speed Njs at which all particles are suspended, but few studies have been devoted so far to their critical comparative assessment [67] . In the present paper, several alternative Njs prediction methods are applied to CFD results obtained for selected test cases covering a broad range of suspension conditions and impeller speeds. Results are compared with one another and with classic empirical correlations [88] . The aim of the work is to assess the adequacy of different methods for predicting Njs and, more generally, to contribute to a viable CFD-based str…
